I'm not sure why it wasn't the first package mentioned. I find depending on the subject, plus magnification determine which software I use. The Focus stacking software application enables the creation of one all focused image. ImageJ which I use in astrophotography is one, Hugin is another. The rail is nice for getting very exact focus steps for more extreme macro where very tiny steps are needed. Zerene is pretty much the standard for stacking, at least amongst macro photographers. There are many software that can do this more or less automatic. In my reading on the subject there is no problem with using the lens ring to change focus.
I think some camera bodies are capable of automating this somewhat tedious process with a USB connection to your computer and special software but not Pentax as far as I know. The stacking software takes care of the rest.
